LAURANCE S. ROCKEFELLER
International resort developer, art collector
Inn: Built by Laurance Rockefeller
. . .
On the site of an old tavern established
in 1792 for lawyers and other employees of the court. The property
holds a wealth of history and stories of a once booming area for stagecoach
and railroad. America’s first ski-lift was built here in a cow pasture
just north of town. Rockefeller envisioned this area as a number
one ski resort, and it is. Now you can live the dream.
137 guest rooms, 6 suites, all with full
private baths and some with fireplaces. During a $14 million renovation
in 1989, a new wing was artfully added to give the impression of three
attached townhouses. Decorated in simple understated elegance
with reproduction furnishings and handmade quilts.
Seasonal activities: On-site ski trails
for all ability levels. Indoor/outdoor swimming and tennis; squash,
croquet, racquetball and bicycling; 18 hole golf course, driving range
and putting green. Full Sports Center offers Pro Shop, exercise rooms,
aerobics, weight training, massage, sauna, steam and whirlpool. Luxurious
dining room, café and tavern.
